Hi! My name is Maya Gengozian. I am a stage actor, musician, and writer currently based in New York City.
I am a 19-year-old Armenian-American born and raised in Clovis, CA. I have been studying music and voice since I was 7 years old. When I was 8 years old, I participated in my first musical, and from then on I have been an avid performer throughout California's Central Valley, and now I'm studying in New York City! I have been a part of productions at California Arts Academy, Good Company Players at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater and The Second Space Theater, Children's Musical Theaterworks, and Buchanan High School's BearStage. I was a member of the Good Company Players' Junior Company from 2012-2016. My primary private voice teacher was Debi Ruud at Fresno Music Academy and Arts from 2013-2020. From April 2018-August 2020, I taught a children's music theory course called Music FunTime at Fresno Music Academy and Arts. Music FunTime is a class for kids ages 18 months-7 years old where students learn the basics of music theory through the use of games, art, and basic rhythm instruments. The goal is to get the students excited about music and prepare them to take private lessons - whether that be in an instrument or voice. I plan to continue teaching in Summer 2021 at FMAA.
I graduated from Floyd B. Buchanan High School in Clovis Unified School District in 2020. At Buchanan, I was a part of BearStage Drama as well as The UnBearables Improv Team. I graduated with a 3.8 GPA, having taken six AP classes and two Career Technical Educations (CTE) courses - Drama 2 Technical Theatre and ROP Stagecraft. I was also a California Scholarship Federation (CSF) Lifetime member. In September 2019, I directed, co-wrote, vocal directed, and lighting designed Jukebox Heroes: a Jukebox Musical Revue. This show took songs from famous Broadway jukebox musicals, including hits by Carole King, The Beatles, ABBA, and more. I participated at the Clovis Unified Drama Festival every year in high school with BearStage. In 2017, BearStage won the Sweepstakes Award (the award for the most points overall). In 2018, we won the award for Best Large Group Musical Number, which I was a part of. In 2019, BearStage again won the Sweepstakes Award. Finally, in 2020, BearStage won the Sweepstakes Award as well as the award for Best Small Group Musical Number, a tap number to "Partner in Crime" from Tuck Everlasting, which I co-choreographed.
In the spring of 2020, I made the decision to attend New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development for a BM in Vocal Performance Music Theatre. I am also planning to double major in Journalism. My current private voice teacher is Matthew Shepard Smith.
Aside from all of that, I enjoy watching movies and television as well as spending time with my friends and family. My favorite tv shows are Grey's Anatomy, Friends, The Bold Type, and Scandal. My favorite movies are Little Women (2019), Tangled, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I am a studier of astrology and lover of coffee, boba tea, Pinterest, and shopping.
I am very passionate about human rights issues, especially when it comes to women's rights and gender equality. I stand with and support my fellow Americans who are oppressed in ways I could never fully understand, and I hope that by doing so and doing whatever I can to fight the racism and oppression in this country, we can make this world a better place for everyone.
